Elaine Ray
President
Stanford University

Elaine Ray currently serves as director of campus communications for Stanford University. She first came to Stanford in 1995 as one of that year's John S. Knight journalism fellows. Prior to her Knight Fellowship, she worked for several years as an editorial writer for the Boston Globe, helping to shape the paper's editorial positions on such topics as civil rights, domestic violence, K-12 education, Haitian refugees and South Africa. She also spent many years as an editor and writer for Essence magazine, first as editor of the magazine's career and travel sections and ultimately as executive editor. In 2005, Ms. Ray joined forces with other Palo Alto Unified School District parents to found the Parent Network for Students of Color, an organization dedicated to advocating at all levels to create a climate of high expectations and academic achievement for all. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Ms. Ray earned her B.A. from Chatham College and an M.A. in journalism from Kent State University. Her hobbies include creative writing, travel , and African dance. Her daughter, Zuri, is a member of the Spelman College Class of 2012. |

Jim Phillips
Vice President

Mr. Phillips retired from Lockheed Space Systems Division after 37 years in the Aerospace and Defense industry, including 10 years with General Electric. During his career, he was a development engineer, adjunct professor, technical manager and managing executive. As a line executive he played a significant role in employee diversity programs at Lockheed. He co-chaired the YWCA's 'Commitment to Diversity' conferences in the early 1990s and has served on the Board of the YMCA of the Mid-Peninsula and as president of the Palo Alto YMCA. He has recently served as an advisor for Foundation for a College Education. He is currently the on the Boards of the Palo Alto Kiwanis Club (past president), Palo Alto Community Child Care, Peninsula Habitat for Humanity (SMC), and on the Donor Advised Fund Committee -YWCA of the Mid-Peninsula. He lives in Palo Alto with his wife, Alma. They have a married son, a married daughter and a granddaughter. |

S. Tyler Edelstein
Treasurer
Ocean Endowment Partners

Tyler Edelstein founded the Ocean Endowment Fund in 2007 to provide
small to medium-sized endowments, private foundations, family offices,
and high net worth individuals access to the same investment
strategies, processes, and proven managers used by the largest and most
successful university endowments. Formerly, Ms. Edelstein was a Managing
Director at Stanford Management Company (SMC) and a senior member of
its Portfolio Management Group. As Managing Director of Real Estate and
Natural Resources, Ms. Edelstein oversaw the $3 billion global real assets
portfolio for the Stanford University Merged Endowment Pool and as
Managing Director, Separate Investments Division, had chief investment
officer responsibilities for $2 billion in assets managed outside the
main endowment pool, including its Charitable Remainder Trust program.
Prior to joining SMC, Ms. Edelstein worked as an independent consultant
specializing in corporate strategy, mergers and acquisitions, and
previously worked with Peripheral Systems Group, a medical device
start-up company, and Morgan Stanley & Co. Ms. Edelstein holds a B.A.
degree from Williams College and an M.B.A. from Stanford University's
Graduate School of Business. She serves on the Williams College
Advisory Committee for Gift Planning. |

Martin Lamarque
Hand-In-Hand

Martin Lamarque is an FCE parent. His daughter, Yoali, graduated from FCE's College Bound Program in 2008 and is a junior at UC Santa Cruz. Mr. Lamarque teaches at Hand-in-Hand, a Palo Alto-based organization that nurtures the parent-child connection. A Spanish translator for 25 years, Mr. Lamarque has worked at community-based facilities in rural Mexico that provide rehabilitation services for disabled children. He is strongly committed to an approach to raising children that promotes strong connections between parents and children. He also has a long history of involvement with organizations that foster positive social change through the support of parents. |

Rick Banks
Stanford University

Rick Banks is the Jackson Eli Reynolds Professor of Law at Stanford Law School. He is a leading scholar of race, inequality, and the law. After graduating from college, Professor Banks worked in the Upward Bound Program at Stanford University. During that time, he wrote regularly about race, culture, and inequality for a number of newspapers, including the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Chicago Tribune. Professor Banks received his law degree in 1994 and practiced law until 1998 when he joined the Stanford Law School faculty where he teaches family law, employment discrimination law, race and law, and the Fourteenth Amendment. He has been a visiting professor at Harvard Law School and the University of Virginia Law School. Professor Banks's research, writings, and lectures focus on issues related to race and inequality across a variety of domains, from criminal justice, to employment, to the family. His scholarly writings have appeared in numerous journals, including the Yale Law Journal, the Stanford Law Review, the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review, and the Stanford Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review. Professor Banks received his B.A. and M.A. from Stanford University and his law degree from Harvard University. He and his wife, Jennifer Eberhardt, a prominent social psychologist who is also a Stanford University faculty member, have three children. |

Dandre DeSandies
Stanford University

Dandre DeSandies is Associate Director of Undergraduate Advising and Research at Stanford University. He helps undergraduates take advantage of a wide array of opportunities for research with Stanford faculty. He also serves as a staff therapist at Counseling and Psychological Services, a division of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs. Dr. DeSandies has over thirty years of experience as an educational administrator in higher education. He has organized academic support programs for student athletes, advised students on their academic pursuits, and been involved with various efforts to promote diversity at Stanford University. Dr. DeSandies holds an A.B. in Sociology and Government from Dartmouth College, an M.A. in Education from San Francisco State University and an EdD in Counseling and Educational Psychology from the University of San Francisco. Former residents of East Palo Alto, Dr. DeSandies and his wife, Man Yee, both taught elementary school in that community. They have two sons, a daughter-in-law, and a grandson and enjoy spending as much time with family as possible. |

Charles Edwards
Secretary

Charles Edwards was a member of FCE's first graduating class in 1999. He is also the first FCE graduate to join the organization's Board of Directors. Mr. Edwards' involvement with FCE began when he was in the 11th grade and started thinking about his future. He knew that he wanted to go to college, but since neither of his parents had attended college, he didn't know how to negotiate the application process. He learned about FCE through family friends who had a son in the program. Mr. Edwards received his B.A. in Liberal Studies from the University of Arizona, making him the first member of his family to earn a college degree. After graduation he joined FCE as an intern and then as a full-time member of the staff, welcoming the opportunity to give back both to FCE and to the East Palo Alto community. Mr. Edwards has just completed an M.S.W. and volunteers at FCE as a college coach. Having been an FCE student, staff member, and volunteer Mr. Edwards possesses a depth of knowledge about the organization that makes him an invaluable member of the Board of Directors.

Magdalena Rosales Fittoria
Palo Alto Unified School District

Magdalena Fittoria is a Bilingual Teacher of 4th and 5th grade students
in the Spanish Immersion Program at Escondido Elementary School in the
Palo Alto Unified School District. She is the senior staff member who
has devoted ten years of teaching in this program that develops
Spanish-English fluency, promotes multicultural awareness, and achieves
grade level academic proficiency. Prior to working as a teacher, Ms.
Fittoria worked in the Ravenswood City School District as a grant
writer and coordinator of special programs, including serving as
Director of the Even Start Family Literacy Program, which provided
early childhood education, adult education, and parent support to
families in East Palo Alto. Ms. Fittoria was born in Mexico and is the
first generation of her family to attend a higher education
institution. Her children, Miguel and Jessica, both attend Palo Alto
High School and participate in FCE. Ms. Fittoria received a B.A. degree
in Anthropology and an M.A. in Education from Stanford University. She
received her Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential from Notre Dame de
Namur University in Belmont.

Harris Ginyard
Consultant

Harris Ginyard serves as a consultant and the Community Association Manager with Ace Property Management. He negotiates contracts and implements and coordinates major capital improvement projects, working closely with a variety of stake holders, including Boards of Directors, homeowners, vendors, and contractors. He is a certified real estate broker and an instructor for the California Association of Community Managers (CACM). Mr. Ginyard has served on the Board of Directors of the Mountain View Community Services Agency, and the Palo Alto Red Cross. He is currently a member of the Board of Oriki Theater Rites of Passage Program for teen age boys. He graduated from North Carolina Central University with a B.S. in Business Administration and received an M.B.A. from Columbia University.

Cathy Kroymann
Community Volunteer

Cathy Kroymann has been a community volunteer since moving to Palo Alto
with her husband and two sons in 1986. She was a classroom volunteer
and parent leader in the school district for twenty years, serving on
the Palo Alto Unified School District Board of Education from
1997-2005. Ms. Kroymann served as President of the Board of Education in 2000
and 2004 and as President of the Santa Clara County School Boards
Association in 2001. She also represented Santa Clara County as a
delegate to the California School Boards Association for six years.
During her tenure on the Board of Education, Ms. Kroymann was a strong
advocate for equity in the schools and for providing opportunities for
all students to be successful. In addition to her work in the schools,
Ms. Kroymann is involved in numerous other community organizations. She is
currently on the Palo Alto Community Fund Board and the Senior Day
Health Board and has served as President of both boards. Ms. Kroymann is also
a member of the Avenidas Board and the Adolescent Counseling Services
Advisory Board. |

Sylvie Way
CPA, retired

Sylvie Way is a retired accountant who, during her twenty-five year career, specialized in Taxation and Estate Planning. She has a long history as a community volunteer with a strong focus on edcuation, having served as president and board member of Addison and Jordan Middle School's PTA and Palo Alto High School's PTSA. She has also been actively involved in organizations that work with low-income students and at-risk adolescents. She was president of the board of Adolescent Counseling Services and the Palo Alto Unified School District, currently serves on the board of the gold Star Scholarship Memorial Fund at Palo Alto High School, and has been involved with Palo Alto Community Child Care and the Association for Senior Day Health. Ms. Way graduated from the University of Colorado with a B.A. in Anthropology and a B.S. in Accounting.

Anna L. Waring, Ph.D.

Dr. Anna L. Waring has been FCE's executive director since July
2007. Prior to joining FCE she was president of Josephinum Academy, an
all girls' Catholic school located in the Wicker Park area of Chicago.
Dr. Waring became Josephinum Academy's first president in 2002 after
serving on the board of directors for seven years. Before coming to
Josephinum, Dr. Waring worked at DePaul University as an assistant dean
in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a faculty member in the
Public Services Graduate Program. Between college and graduate school,
she worked in admissions and alumni affairs for A Better Chance, Inc.,
a national talent search organization for academically gifted students
of color, which places students in independent and selected public high
schools. Dr. Waring grew up in Boston, MA and was educated in the
Boston Public Schools through grade eight. For high school she attended
Milton Academy, an independent school just south of Boston. Dr. Waring
has a B.A. in Psychology from Williams College and received her Ph.D.
in Education from Stanford University. Currently, she serves on the
Head of School Council at Milton Academy in Milton, MA and is a member
of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. |

Janice Brody
Director of Development

Dr. Janice Brody, Director of Development, joined FCE in April 2009.
Dr. Brody has extensive experience in fundraising, outreach, and
communications activities, as well as a strong commitment to positive
social change for youth from under-served communities. At the Global
Fund for Women, she assumed an active role in creating and implementing
a long-term fundraising and communications plan. As a member of the
founding team of the Girls Middle School in Mountain View and the
first board chair, Dr. Brody worked to raise the funds to support the
school's goal of providing comprehensive financial aid to
high-potential, low-income students. Dr. Brody has been actively
involved with the East Palo Alto community for a number of years. She
was a founding member of the Ravenswood Education Foundation, whose
initial goal was to fund a district-wide, arts-infused curriculum. In
the summer of 2008, she raised the funds for, developed, and
implemented an arts curriculum for incarcerated teens at the Margaret
J. Kemp Camp for Girls. And she currently serves on the board of Music
in the Schools Foundation, an in-school music program, which reaches
over a thousand students a week in the Ravenswood district.

Joyce Latu

Joyce Latu, Assistant Director of College Bound Programs, is an alumna
of FCE's College Bound and College Success programs. Ms. Latu graduated
from Dominican University with a degree in Psychology. It was at
Dominican that she was exposed to the college admission process as an
ambassador in the Admissions Office and became a passionate advocate
for higher education for underrepresented students. Ms. Latu joined the
College Board's Western Regional office as an Educational Associate,
where she worked with a variety of school districts and their teachers,
and she quickly recognized the need to expand her outreach to parents
and students as well. In addition to directing FCE's College Bound
Program, Ms. Latu recruits and supervises students, and develops and
implements new curricula and activities. She also manages FCE's staff
of volunteers, including recruiting, screening and matching of tutors,
college coaches, and college admission assistants.

Rachael Behrens

Rachael Behrens, Assistant Director of College Success and Administration, joined FCE in June 2010. Ms. Behrens has extensive experience working with families from diverse backgrounds and has a strong desire to make a difference in low-income communities. She earned a B.A. in Spanish and Psychology from the University of Washington and an M.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her research has focused on the ways in which low-income, minority, immigrant, and first-generation college students achieve their dreams of attending college while still maintaining connections to their families and cultural communities. She currently manages the college retention program to ensure that FCE college students are making progress towards earning their degrees. Ms. Behrens meets with students and families to help them plan their college careers. She hosts workshops, maintains the FCE student Facebook site, and oversees the FCE scholarship program. She also recruits college representatives to visit FCE in the fall, and organizes student college tours. She is involved in many of FCE's administrative responsibilities and is helping the organization grow by ensuring it adheres to 2009 - 2012 Strategic Action Plan. In addition to her work with the College Success Program, Ms. Behrens volunteers with dependent and delinquent youth and holds training sessions in English and Spanish for volunteers of the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program. |

'Amelia Kolokihakaufisi

'Amelia Kolokihakaufisi is the College Bound Program Assistant. She first joined FCE in 2008 through the Public Allies apprenticeship program. As a first-generation college student, Ms. Kolokihakaufisi understands well the challenges faced by many low-income students of color. Before coming to FCE, she served as Youth and Young Adult Coordinator for the City of EPA Community Services Department. At FCE, Ms. Kolokihakaufisi runs the Student Leadership Program, is the college coach for the high school freshman, and leads a book discussion and writing group. She is currently finishing an undergraduate degree in Urban Studies at San Francisco State University. As an East Palo Alto native, Ms. Kolokihakaufisi is passionate about serving her community and is involved with the EPA Promise Neighborhood Initiative, volunteers as a community mentor for the EPA Sponsored Employment Program, and serves on the Board of Directors of the East Palo Alto Youth Court. |

He has recently joined FCE in 2011 through the Public Allies Program. Before working at FCE he served as Higher Education Coordinator for the Pacific Islander Education and Retention program at UCLA serving students of color through holistic development. Mr Ilaoa is dedicated and passionate about increased college access in under served communities. |

Dr. Cornel West
National Advisor

Dr. West, an internationally acclaimed scholar on race, politics, equity
and social justice, has been described as one of America's most gifted
and provocative public intellectuals. Dr. West received his
undergraduate degree from Harvard University and his graduate degrees
from Princeton University, where he is currently the Class of 1943
Professor of Religion. He has also held positions at Union Theological
Seminary, Yale, Harvard and the University of Paris. The author of the
contemporary classic, Race Matters, and most recently, Democracy Matters,
he is the recipient of the American Book Award and has earned more than
twenty honorary degrees. Passionate, provocative and inspiring, he is a
powerful role model for our young men and women and embodies FCE's
mission and vision.
