One Hundred Percent of FCE 2006 High School Graduates Going to College
By Alexandra Bernadotte
Foundation for a College Education (FCE), a non-profit organization based in East Palo Alto, announced today that 100 percent of their high school senior students will be going to four-year colleges in the fall. The eight seniors will be lauded at FCE’s Eighth Annual Senior Celebration on Friday, May 19.
FCE seeks to increase the number of students of color enrolling in and graduating from college. Through free comprehensive academic planning and college counseling services, FCE builds the capacity of students and their families to believe that college is within their reach. The Senior Celebration is the culmination of these efforts as the entire FCE family – students, parents, volunteers, staff, board, and friends – gathers to applaud the amazing accomplishments of the graduating seniors. The seniors in turn will have the opportunity to publicly thank their families, mentors, and all who encouraged and supported them on their journey.
“We’re thrilled that our high school seniors will be going off to such a wide range of schools, including Stanford, Suffolk University in Boston, University of San Francisco, and St. Mary’s College,” said Stephanie Wick, Executive Director of FCE. “Given the right resources and encouragement, students from all backgrounds and experiences can achieve high standards and make important contributions to their families and communities. We are so proud of our students, and we are excited to continue to support them throughout their college careers.”
Jalyssa Clay, an East Palo Alto resident who enrolled in FCE in her freshman year at Palo Alto High School, says: “My participation in FCE has given me the confidence I needed to challenge myself academically and to step outside of my comfort zone. I have taken more challenging courses, visited numerous college campuses, and developed my leadership skills. I am grateful that FCE pushed me to realize my full potential.”
Jalyssa and her classmates will join the existing 65 FCE students who have already graduated from high school and are enrolled in or have graduated from college. These students demonstrate FCE’s commitment to create meaningful community change and increase equity and access in higher education. They also prove FCE’s fundamental belief that high expectations do, in fact, lead to high achievement.
